Reflecting on my FAR-West showcase, write a song about a character in another song, and Fox Den this Friday

Heya folks,

Welcome back to another edition of Sharing Notes!

Reflecting on my FAR-West showcase

I shared a couple photos of my official showcase at the Folk Alliance Region West Conference, with videos to come. I'm so grateful to have been selected as an official showcase artist and for having such an attentive audience. To get a bit vulnerable, this year has been a slog in so many ways, particularly in health and career, and showcasing at FAR-West was the win I needed.

Write a song about a character in another song

At FAR-West, I learned a new songwriting exercise from storyteller Tom Hubbard, who learned it from a mutual friend, Ed Tree: write a song about another character in someone else's song. This reminds me of something I've learned from poetry—how two pieces can be in conversation with one another. You can check out other songwriting exercises I've collected here.

Fox Den this Friday

My partner, Jessica Gerhardt, and I host a monthly house concert called Friday at the Fox Den. This Fri, Oct 20, we're featuring performances by jly, Friends + Family, Geneva May, and Kapali Long. Doors are at 7pm. Tickets are $15. RSVP here for the address. As an aside, I've been having fun drawing and designing the last couple posters—it has been meditative. "Drawing is simply another way of seeing," says cartoonist Chris Ware.

Meme moment

Peace,
