Some live performance videos, art vs. ugliness, and digital audio myths

Heya folks,

Check out these live videos from the Eclectic Festival

Back in April, I had the privilege of playing the South Pasadena Eclectic. My friend David Whiskey kindly filmed Everybody is a Fool, Seeking a Friend in LA, and The Other Shoe. If you'd like to hear more live music from me, join me for a special Pride edition of Friday at the Fox Den, Jun 30 at 7pm.

Art as resistance against ugliness

I love a good sad song. A good sad song can transcend the ugliness of despair. To try to understand how and why (and to avoid falling into the cynicism pitfall), I've been note-taking about best practices for sad songwriting for the last several months. I just found this René Magritte quote which illuminates this topic for me: "I live in a very unpleasant world because of its routine ugliness. That's why my painting is a battle, or rather a counter-offensive." Pair with the Dostoevsky quote, "Beauty will save the world."

No, digital audio is not fundamentally worse than analog

A few weeks ago I wrote about the silly "to learn or not to learn theory" debate. There's a similarly pointless debate over analog versus digital audio. Now this may be a fairly in-group joke among musicians and producers, but folks, we have achieved peak analog elitist absurdity. The following video debunks a few digital audio myths, so have no fear about using your digital synths. Truly, there are things analog does well, and there are things digital does well, and both are tools.

Bits and bobs
