The Tower of Babel Falls turns 1 year old; let's keep helping Mahmoud and Ahmed; oh yeah, that!
Hey folks,
Welcome back to another edition of Sharing Notes! Read in your browser here.
The Tower of Babel Falls turns 1 year old
My album The Tower of Babel Falls turns 1 year old on Oct 3 (and I turn 34)! If you haven't bought it yet, a great time to buy any of my music is today, Friday, Oct 2, on Bandcamp Friday. If you've already bought it on Bandcamp and want make my day, consider leaving a review—I'd love to hear what you think! And if you're an artist or producer, there's still time to submit a cover or remix of one of the songs to be featured on the b-sides release! Submissions close Oct 17. More info here.
Let's keep helping Mahmoud and Ahmed!
I want to give you an update on Ahmed: Mahmoud shared that they have found an infection in his lower abdomen. The operation to treat him costs over $900! All the while, Ahmed also continues to suffer fever, lesions, and difficulty breathing—the same virus that killed his sister. And as I shared last week, Mahmoud's mother is also recovering from an infection. Mahmoud must fundraise for medical care for both his mother and nephew and provide food for his family of 13. This poor family is going through hell. Please contribute to their fundraiser here and help me share their story. Mahmoud has been vouched for by Gaza Verified.
Oh yeah, that!
Have you ever discovered something you were already familiar with, but you just didn't know the word(s) for it? A friend of mine recently bought me a copy of The Dictionary of Obscure Sorrows (my inner Tumblr teen is filled with glee). From it, I learned the word ringlorn, "the wish that the modern world felt as epic as the one depicted in old stories and folktales." Oh yeah, that! Those memories of the comedown exiting the movie theater, turning off the game console, finishing the latest book in the series. And speaking of Tumblr—today I happened upon "hipness purgatory," the cheeky name for a particular aesthetic I used to see all over Tumblr and album covers in the 00s. Oh yeah, that! And a few years ago, I watched this short about how our bodies radiate disorder and hasten the heat-death of the universe, and I thought, oh yeah, that's how it feels to live under late-stage capitalism sometimes, so I wrote this song.
