Hey folks,
Welcome back to another edition of Sharing Notes! Read online here. It has been a while since I wrote one of these, and in that time I've been busy with new music!
New album this fall!
I've spent much of this summer finishing what will be my first full-length record. If you've been to one of my live shows in the last 3 years, you may recognize some of these songs.
The Tower of Babel Falls is a take-down of so-called Christian nationalism and bigotry. Some songs are loud protest songs. Others are quiet stories. It's an album for weird Christians, queers, antifascists, and anyone who has been hurt by the church.
I recently finished the first pass of mixing, and I'm so happy with how it's turning out. It feels true to me in a way I haven't been able to capture as well before. There's my usual chamber folk/alt-country sound, but I also took the opportunity to stretch out to incorporate other styles that have been influential to me, such as electronica, rock, and jazz.
I'll be sharing more updates, such as release date, in future emails. I can't wait for you to hear this. :)
Riot cops at nonviolent protests
I wrote a little journaling dump about my experience at one of the Los Angeles anti-ICE protests this summer and how local police responded to our nonviolent action with riot gear and intimidation.
A poem
Trump passed a bill effectively criminalizing homelessness, "ending vagrancy" under the guise of keeping people safe. Locking up people who have been pushed to the margins is violence, not safety. I wanted to share this poem I wrote last year, a cautionary tale of what such a scenario could look like for the people.
Peace, Arend
