New Ramsey Lee single I produced; Help Mahmoud, Ahmed, and family; I review Maddie Zahm's latest for Rainbow Rodeo

Hey folks,

New Ramsey Lee single I produced!

Ramsey Lee and I are pleased to bring you her latest single, "Saint." I contributed guitar, bass, and auxilliary keys, and I produced and mixed this one. We had fun adding some retro rompler keys, particularly the E-mu Proteus, a rompler used in lots of TV and games in the 90s (think Thomas the Tank Engine or Crash Bandicoot). One of my favorite little Easter eggs in this production is a Proteus saxophone that doubles the guitar lead at 2:38. It's hidden in there, to add a little uncanny texture to the guitar. This is one of my favorite production techniques: doubling a part with another instrument to create the desired tone.

Help Mahmoud, Ahmed, and family

Two months ago I connected with a university student in Gaza named Mahmoud. You may remember Mahmoud and his nephew Ahmed from a previous email. Mahmoud cares for his sister's children, after his brother-in-law died. Little Ahmed is deathly ill with an undiagnosed virus which causes fever, lesions, and difficulty breathing. (I wonder if it's COVID.) Ahmed's sister died of the same virus. On top of this, his mother recently contracted an infection from open wounds on her leg. It required surgery. Ahmed must now fundraise for medication for both his nephew, Ahmed, and his mother and provide food for the family of 13. As of two days ago, they must raise over $300 to afford all this. Please contribute to the family's fundraiser here.

I review Maddie Zahm's latest album for Rainbow Rodeo

Maddie Zahm's sophomore album Everything All The Time continues to explore themes of identity and sexuality, tapping deeper into self-realization, personal growth, and big emotions, with the latter being the vehicle for it all. The album offers a diverse range of classic-songbook-inspired ballads, '70s West-Coast folk rock, anthemic pop country, atmospheric indie folk, and even a little '00s-hoedown-throwback-dance-country moment. Maddie Zahm gives us not just her characteristic belting highs but also some impressive, bellowing alto and gentle plain-spoken lyricism that makes her, in my opinion, one of the most unique new singing voices in folk-pop.
