A collage for Gaza

I started working on this piece a week ago after hearing that Palestinians have resorted to eating animal food, weeds, grass to stave off hunger. Today, I learned about the Flour Massacre, in which Israeli soldiers killed over a hundred hungry Palestinians and wounded hundreds more as they were being offered aid. Weaponized starvation is the latest in the genocide tactics of the state of Israel against Palestinian civilians. The words in the collage are those of Jesus in the Gospel of Luke. You can read more from my artist statement here.

A new record I got to mix

I co-engineered and mixed my parter Jessica Gerhardt's new tune "Eyelash to Eyelash." It's a song of grief and doubt after the passing of her grandmother, and it continues to hold weight today in light of the grief we feel for the death and suffering of Palestinians. Jessica wrote, "My Grandma Libi was a fierce activist who used her poetry, comedy, dance, and art to convey her messages. She was a non-conformist with chutzpah that I aspire to exhibit in my own life." Credits and props to my friend Boi Xochi for producing such a beautiful arrangement.

An article on a trans activist's funeral

I had the privilege with Jessica to write a piece for National Catholic Reporter about the funeral of trans Argentine-American activist Cecilia Gentili. Many queerphobic Christians had ugly things to say about her and those who celebrated her life, and in response to their condemnation, we wanted to speak to the beauty and love we witnessed in the livestream playback of her funeral. My favorite moment was when the second reader, a Black woman, did a little kick in her heels as she approached the altar and said, "We still gonna show up as us," before reading from 1 John 3.

Peace,
Arend
