Art trains our imagination for good

Art helps us imagine a better world. Wole Soyinka, Nigerian writer and activist once replied to a question of what literature can do in the face of injustice saying, "Well, present a model of possibilities, and that is all." Palestinian-American artist Fargo Nissim Tbakhi writes that Augusto Boal, Brazilian playwright and UNESCO World Theatre Ambassador, created pieces "dedicated to empowering audiences to act, to participate in a creative struggle to envision and embody alternatives." When we use our art to inspire and empower others, we may be able to begin to realize a more just, loving society.

Pasadena City Council ceasefire resolution

These last few Mondays, I've had the honor of holding vigil and protesting with an interfaith community of Muslims, Jews, and Christians calling for a ceasefire in Gaza. I'm grateful to have served this community by designing this flyer. Come join us at Pasadena City Hall Mon, Mar 11 at 5pm. We're trying to get Pasadena City Council to pass a resolution for ceasefire. You can also hold vigil with signs and banners outside City Hall (and there will activities for children). And no, you don't have to be living in Pasadena to come and show your solidarity!

Use a vocoder on not-vocals

I imagine you're familiar with the classic robot-vocal sound à la Daft Punk. But for a more experimental approach, try using a different audio signal to feed the vocoder. I remember years ago reading Mason Self did this in his piece "Waves," vocoding the entire mix through some field recordings of crashing waves. The effect is something like a lofi, chewed-up tape sound. And it's particularly effective for adding some texture to synth pads. I had fun playing with this the other night before bed, which conjured teenage memories of listening to Jónsi and Alex and Hammock.

Peace,
Arend
